What Exactly is Web 2.0?

9 December 2007 No Comment

Web 2.0 is becoming quite a widely used term in the Online world.

Is the term “Web 2.0″ more than just a trendy buzz-word? Maybe.

There are quite a few features of both design and development that are considered to be part of Web 2.0 form and function. For example, RSS feeds and CSS design are two basic technologies that are considered part of the Web 2.0 revolution.

New implementations of Web 2.0-esque ideas are developed every day.

I have run into various groups and individuals who either have a quality understanding also those who do not grasp the ideas involved with Web 2.0.

What is the definition of Web 2.0? That’s just it. There isn’t one. There are quite a few proposed definitions, but there is not a single widely-accepted explanation.

I came upon a web company that seems to specialize in high-quality Web 2.0 implementation. The design and development that Wiliam offers is quite respectable.

What does Wiliam say about Web 2.0?

“Web 2.0 means unprecedented on-line visitor participation, interest, and buy-in. The power and glory of Web 2.0 comes from collaboration and information sharing among users, facilitated by Web technologies and features that were not available, or not effective, as little as five years ago.”

Is this definition one to be accepted? It’s a good start.

Although visitor participation is a big help, all Web 2.0 features do not require visitor participation, interest and buy-in.

“…collaboration and information sharing among users…” is a worthy phrase. However, I would substitute the term “sources” in place of “users.”

The “five years ago” clause may not be quite accurate. Web 2.0 features were available at that time, but may have not been termed as such.

The work that Wiliam offers seems to be top-notch for the industry, and I commend them for their work.

In respect to the idea of presenting the definition to Wiliam site visitors, the definition does indeed aid in selling an easy-to-understand idea of Web 2.0 to potential clients.

A definition for such a term may have to be quite broad in order to encompass all the features of Web 2.0 technologies.
