Facebook Pages for Companies is Low-Cost Marketing
I was thinking about how Online social networks are perceived by those who are not familiar with them. (As a side note, Facebook is currently the largest online social network.)
First was the idea of people putting their personal information Online. Second was the idea of using social networks, such as Facebook, specifically as a place to create a profile about a company, rather than a person.
Facebook has their site specifically set up to let users do this. It’s called Facebook Pages. For an example, check out the InformIT Facebook page. (Notice that you don’t have to log in to view the page.)
What’s the difference between a Facebook user profile and a Facebook Page?
Well, everybody (even those who are not registered on the site) can see a company page on Facebook. But individual profile pages have restrictions that are automatically set with much tighter security restrictions so that they are not viewable to the public.
What does this mean for companies? Low-cost marketing.

Making a Facebook Page for your company is a marketing tool that connects the company with the millions of users on Facebook. And let’s not forget: Facebook is not just a place for college students. Corporate professionals are also signing up for Facebook, and the trend is growing.

Brandon – I’ve just started following your blog recently and I’m glad you posted about Facebook pages as a marketing tool! I think there are a lot of companies that are overlooking the true marketing potential of Facebook inherent in business pages. I work at theKbuzz and our CEO actually just recently posted a list of tips for maintaining your Facebook business page once you’ve created it – http://thekbuzz-thekisforkerpen.blogspot.com/2008/11/so-youve-put-up-facebook-page-now-what.html Thought you might be interested!
Devin,
Thank you for the comment! I was just in a meeting today about profiles on Facebook pages for companies and/or brands. The tips that you guys have posted are definitely helpful.
For “newbies” to Facebook profiles, I think there is some confusion between the differences of a Group and a Page. Anybody has the ability to make a page for either of them, but each has its own advantages and pitfalls as well.
Thanks for reading!
