Cisco Press Book “IPV6 Security” Review

18 December 2008 No Comment

Review of IPv6 Security by Eric Vyncke & Scott Hogg, ISBN #9781587058387.

I recently had an opportunity to review the Cisco Press Rough Cuts volume on IPv6 Security and found it an interesting read. In approaching the titled subject, the authors took the angle of building a case, much as an attorney would do in a trial.

Vyncke and Hogg begin their “case” by presenting a review of this new version of the Internet Protocol and some of its distinctive characteristics. This has the strength of reorienting readers to specifics required to understand in later chapters.

The approach of the authors with regard to security is fairly comprehensive, and touches on various areas, including specific devices, attacks, and mitigation techniques. One particularly strong technique used in the book is a two-fold approach. The first approaches overall security strategy, which admittedly may be applied to any IP network in general. The second applies more granular concepts to the distinctive issues regarding IPV6.

Of all the areas covered, the two that stand out the most are regarding Mobile IPV6 and Securing IPV4 to IPV6 mechanisms. Both are thorough as well as interesting analyses, and the use of available tools in the examples make the explanations partcularly oustanding.
